Episode 19 – Finding Your Inner Energy – Book Review of “The Big Life”

Today we are focusing on finding your inner energy:

  • Many people haven’t asked themselves “what do I really want?” in regard to their lives.  This is where our theme of energy comes in …
  • Energy comes from within when we love and enjoy life
  • We have found 3 authors that share unique perspectives on how to find this inner energy.
    • Mary will share more about The Big Leap by Guy Henderickson
    • Linda will share more about Simplicity by Richard Rohr
    • Melissa will share more about The Big Life by Ann Shoket

This book review is one written this year from a past editor of Seventeen Magazine, Ann Shoket, who in her 40s is very much up on Millennial women in the 20s and 30s and what they are striving for.

She states that Millennial women are changing what it means to be powerful and successful. She looks at women who were older were trying to get the table vs women today are at the table and want to do it their way. They want it on your own terms. Not climbing corporate ladder in the corner office but a career with twists and turns and adventure. And success that is meaningful to them. They want to make a mark on the world.

She brings together women at the kitchen table where young, hungry, ambitious women go through a list of short provocative conversation starters about getting what you want out of life. She interviews some very successful millennial women who have done it their own way…which is mostly starting new companies from blogs and social media.

The following 4 concepts that I liked about this book as I thought they could be thought-provoking to ourselves and our listeners.

  1. She quotes: “Good things come to those who hustle.” Reading her book gives you a mental kick in the butt to boost your productivity and inner motivation. Exercise: How do you get your hustle? What helps gives you your personal kick in but in your life?
  2. She quotes: How a side hustle will make you smarter, hotter, and more in control of your destiny. Your side hustle is not your job. It’s something you are working on by yourself or with others on the side that you are in total control that is an experiment of sorts of something you are passionate about…  Exercise: Do you have a “side hustle”? What is your side hustle? How does it give you energy?
  3. She quotes: Why work/life balance is a sham and your need to embrace the mess. It’s OK and good for life to messy and hard. It does not have to be perfect. Exercise: How do you embrace “mess’? Why does it feel good to just go with flow of life messes?
  4. Shoket is a huge believer that women can do bigger and better things if we help each other. Why you need a “squad” of people who support you as you build your Big Life… Exercise: Do you have a squad of people who support you? Are they also hungry and ambitious to realize your dream?

As an action plan for our listeners:

Think about …

  • Good things come to those who hustle. How can you boost your productivity and inner motivation?
  • What is your side hustle? How does it give you energy?
  • You need to embrace the mess
  • Do you need to build your squad of people who support you?
